I have over 15 years’ in-house experience working within busy editorial teams, transforming raw text into polished, user-focused, publishable content. My work includes academic articles, research papers, dissertations, doctoral theses, scientific journals, educational texts, non-fiction manuscripts, lesson materials, blogs, websites, handbooks, policy documents, reports, marketing copy, environmental guidelines and energy sector engineering and emergency procedures.I also work with fiction writers on novels, novellas and short stories. Proofreading

I can offer proofreading on its own or combined with another service. This involves working on edited text in its final layout and:• checking for essential errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation• making minor changes for sense• ensuring all page elements are consistent and correctly placed and style decisions are applied• checking that tables and illustrations are consecutively numbered and placed correctly• checking that references and citations are correctly formatted• checking that an index is formatted consistently

Copyediting

I can also offer copyediting which involves working on raw or draft text and:• checking for spelling, punctuation and grammar errors• making changes for flow, tone and intended readership• applying your house style or ensuring consistency in eg spellings, capital letters, date format, numbers, units• marking up the structure for the designer (headings, boxed text, quotes, tables, etc)• listing items that need permission to use getting permissions (eg for quoted extracts)• formatting references and citations into chosen style• numbering tables, figures and illustrations; checking content against text and captions• querying obvious factual inaccuracies doing substantial research or fact-checking• flagging potential legal issues• marking up an index for consistent formatting

who i am

Before establishing my freelance practice, I worked in-house in publishing, developing the editorial discipline and attention to detail that underpin my work today.I'm a writer and avid reader with a lifelong love of books and creating stories. I've had two short stories published and one novella was longlisted in the Mslexia Children's & YA Novel Competition 2025.Between pages, I'm a budding horticulturist, a botany student and an owner of a boisterous border terrier, who is always on hand to make sure I take breaks from the screen!I'm affiliated with the UK’s top industry-recognised professional organisations. I've trained with The Publishing Training Centre (PTC) London and I’m a Professional Member of The Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). I follow the CIEP's Code of Practice, upholding high editorial standards and establishing strong professional relationships.
